Video game classes at major colleges and universities aren't particularly new: they can be valuable teaching tools in many cases, depending on the course and the game. Making a single course all about the ins and outs of one particular game however is a little odd, but that's exactly what professors at the University of Florida are doing with EME2040: 21st Century Skills in StarCraft. The course will focus on build techniques and strategies, as well as how the skills that you learn playing the game can be applicable in the real world where you may be forced to manage multiple priorities and activities with limited resources. Sound familiar? Don't rush to enroll just yet though, the course does have a pre-requisite, and is only open to students who have "basic knowledge and...

It’s been four years since AMD bought ATI, and almost anyone who had apprehensions about the deal then, have by now resigned themselves to the fact, and for the most part, are happy about the way AMD has maintained ATI’s gamer quotient till this date, and how they saved it from Nvidia’s ruthless market tactics. While many industry experts felt $5.4 billion was simply too much to invest in a graphics company when with a similar amount of money AMD could have built its own, the popularity of the ATI brand was perhaps the number one factor in favour of an acquisition over internal development. Things are different now – ATI is at the top of its game, it has even edged out Nvidia as the market leader in discrete GPU shipments, and AMD is doing really well with its...

AMD released its ATI Catalyst 10.8 drivers recently, and now, some codenames of upcoming GPUs have been found listed in them. What's certainly perplexing is that even though everyone knows the Southern Islands GPUs are the next slated release, these codenames have NI, or Northern Islands, attached to them, even on some obviously Southern Islands of the West Indies, such as Antilles, Barts, Caicos, Cayman, Seymour, and Turks. Whistler and Blackcomb are the only two actual Northern Islands of the Caribbean on the list .The consensus so far is that the 35 new cards listed in the atiicdxx.da_ file are the codenames of what's coming up next, i.e., 40nm, and we can expect the temporarily shelved 32nm Northern Island GPUs much later. While a lot of correlation with the naming schemes of the...

The new slim Xbox 360 250GB Kinect-ready console is now available in India, for Rs. 21,990. Unfortunately no Indian pricing has been revealed for the Kinect as yet. More power efficient with a brand new and first of its kind SoC inside, the new console also comes with Wi-Fi 802.11n, a Kinect port, touch sensitive buttons, and an HDMI-out port (HDMI cable to be purchased separately). While the new console does have a 250GB HDD, it won’t be able to use your old memory cards without a data transfer cable, which also has to be purchased separately. The Xbox 360 250GB console comes with a headset, one wireless controller, and a composite AV cable. ...

Hot Chips is certainly making calorie intake seem glorious, and apart from AMD showcasing their next gen Bulldozer and Bobcat processor technology, Microsoft showed off the new SoC (system-on-chip) processor of the new Xbox 360 250GB Slim Kinect-ready model. It’s a lot faster than the original processor, but that’s irrelevant, as latency had to be introduced to ensure identical speeds.Manufactured with the IBM/GlobalFoundries 45nm process, Microsoft's new SoC is actually the first production desktop-class processor to combine a CPU, GPU, memory, and I/O logic onto a single piece of silicon, and is in homes ahead of AMD’s Fusion and Intel’s Sandy Bridge processors. The combination allows for better power efficiency, as well as much more inexpensive manufacturing...

The Quake series has been developed by iD Software (the creators of Doom and Wolfenstein), and over the course of its history, has become synonymous with intense multiplayer action. Just like Unreal Tournament, it was one of the first franchises to give people a real taste for deathmatches and capture the flag games. Though three of the four games in the series focussed on a story that followed a Doom-like marine protagonist fighting against alien monsters known as the Strogg, the fourth, Quake III Arena, is the least story-centric and the most tournament-driven game of the four, and the most similar to Quake Live.Free-to-play and freshly out of beta (for Windows and Linux...the Mac version is still in beta), Quake Live is a browser based (Firefox or Internet Explorer)...

Certainly well built, the 15.4-inch Intel Core i7-powered MSI GT640 gaming laptop is priced at Rs. 75,000, and is the smaller sibling of the 17-inch GT740. Seemingly well-specced, the laptop is built out of plastic and aluminium alloy, and features a brushed metal texturing on the palm-rest. All this doesn’t make it seem as heavy as it is, going far beyond the impression of solidity by weighing in at 2.7kg (including battery). There are heavier 15.4 inch laptops, but we can safely assure you, carrying one of these in a backpack for an extended period of time is not a prospect we relish. Maybe that’s why it comes in a cardboard carry case. The 15.4-inch screen is unfortunately just short of a full 1080p HD rating, with a resolution of 1680x1050, and a near ‘golden’...

I waited for the alien attack, but it never came, then I waited for the machine uprising, but no cake. What is it about a game that you expect a constant state of doom? Moonbase Alpha is a game developed by NASA in which you play an “astronaut working to further human expansion and research.” Unlike most games involving extraterrestrial locations, there are no aliens to fight, no monsters, your “enemies” are the forces of the universe and time itself. Your “weapons” are the tools of any astronaut's trade, a welding machine, a wrench... Fortunately, in space no one can hear you yawn.If you spent your entire life dreaming of grand space adventures to exotic locations filled with futuristic technology, this game will offer a rudely shocking reality check....

id Software's Rage coming to the iPhoneQuakeCon 2010. Id Software’s programming genius John Carmack shockingly reveals that the highly anticipated Rage will also be developed for the iPhone. Id Software requires no introduction – creators of some of the most loved and famous franchisees in the gaming industry like the Doom and Quake series, the industry veterans have been known to have a Midas touch with any title they develop. And after this startling revelation, came another – Rage on the iPhone is going to be released this year – much ahead of the scheduled 2011 release on PC, MAC and consoles. Carmack is a known iPhone lover, and had earlier described the iPhone as being “more powerful than a Nintendo DS and PSP combined”. Although developed for...
